Making notes as I rewatch! That's a first.
My general reaction to this episode was: Hmm, it could be better - BUT OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I definitely liked it. Although... Why did this episode happen? Because... Oh, I don't know. It felt highly random, but I more or less expect to perhaps find out later. In next? Or not. We'll see. What do you think?
If it's just a random fun episode, I'll take it. I really enjoyed getting away from the present time and the Sanctuary life the way we usually see with it. And despite the Five being painfully mainstream loved throughout fandom, and me (though rarely) being tired of it ALWAYS being about them, I still fangirl them to freakin' DEATH when they get plots. I can't help it!
Did anyone ever figure out Nikola's timeline in all of this?
Enlighten me, please.
And one ETA here.
The fire elemental! Same one as in the Sanctuary? Do you think they brought it with them/went back for it later somehow, or was it another one?
I was a little bored towards the end, and I have no idea how that happened. But despite everything, this episode is one of my favorites because all my shippy ships were shipped! Plus random interaction and World War II.
Now!
Nigel! How cute is Nigel? Both appearance and personality. He glanced at... her. Leader of the resistance. At once. I would write her name but I'm not sure what she said or how to spell it. Anyone?
I definitely choose to believe that they'll get together and make babies later so little Clara can pop up in another episode ages from now! Because those two were adorable.
Nikola in that suit with the hair, though. Oh, and Helen too. She looked so cute. They all did. Different, but cute. Nikola's hair looks better fluffy, haha.
And what is up with him and the Spy Guy anyway? Am I the only one reading something between them? I mean, not as such. But there's some sort of... energy there. I can't phrase it. Maybe the word/s will come to me later.
"And worse, being stuck here with the Kansas State Glee Club."
Tesla said "glee club" ... ahaha, hee, I'm sorry. I watch Glee. Not my fandom, but I watch the show, and... Just lol. Yes, I am five.
They're like... friendly! Him and Spy Guy. At the very least. If not even... not quite flirty, but you know what I mean? Friendly and generally very comfortable around each other, at least. Am I the only one? Is it just because of my nature to slash everything that moves?
ETA: Well! The word I was searching for was chemistry. Am I the only one who think they have an insane amount of chemistry?
The score! They are currently gunning down Nazis and fleeing in that car, leaving James behind, and it hits me how much I like the score. I don't know if it's this scene or the whole episode. Let me get back to you, but this is fitting and glorious.
Couldn't they just have dragged him halfway into the car or something? :( Although if they had we wouldn't have gotten the amazing scenes later on with James and John.
Really now. The accents in this episode. That is one of the flaws. But I don't mind, it's charming. And they're only human, and not all German/French/whatever they were supposed to be, so I understand completely. Rather have funny-accent-flaw than oops-fucked-up-plot-and/or-major-continuity-errors.
Oh, also, I should mention: I'm weird; I think German's hot. It's... obviously not quite as clean and gorgeous as it can be in this episode but PFFT, it's still pretty nom coming from some of their mouths. Like James. Like do me now! (Although that's mostly because he's James and not because he spoke bad German. But it adds to the effect, you know?)
And Helen's French was nom too, in its own way.
But, yeah, it's not just the German. All accents are funny in this episode. Not haha-funny. But amusing, you know?
"You should have stayed in England with Prof. Tesla."
Yeah, that's another thing, I don't really like that he's outside the action. I understand it, sort of, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a little sad.
BUT REALLY NOW - JOHN SHOWS UP AND IS LIKE HOWDY JAMES!
And really now, his reaction to John. REALLY NOW. I love John so much I cant help it. I can't, I can't, I can't! I know he's a crazy killer at times but- but-! JOHN! Ajkdfkdfg
Oh! And speaking of John. John's hair is strangely not so strange at all. I do miss the beard a bit. Obviously talking about James here now. But that, too, is strangely not so strange. I don't mind him either way! Beard or no beard, and John with or without hair.
"Johnny."
I'm sorry. I die every time. It's beyond cute. And my god I was half expecting (it was kind of obvious, come on now!) and half hoping that John would save him. But then I wasn't sure how evil he was and... Ohh, I wasn't entirely sure, and I loved that! I don't know if it was me being confused/dumb, or if it was good writing. Maybe both?
But it was glorious when he did save him! But I'm getting ahead of myself.
I somehow find it hot how John unbuttons his shirt. I obviously knew what was going on and that it was nothing like that. But my eyes saw John undressing James and I mean... hello!? How can one not appreciate that on some level, even if it's irrelevant in that sort of way at that particular moment.
"Of course I do! I'm English!"
I love Nigel.
I recognized Wil-- Jack's...? Robin's? Voice at once. And I simply had to laugh. Because WHAT now?
It feels so entirely pointless! Was it a general idea they wanted to write into the episode, or was it simply to give Robin Dunne something to do? If it was only to place Robin in the episode in any desperate way, it makes it even worse.
Please, it would have been much cooler had it just been the name. We could've picked up on it and gone "Oh, wow!"
But... This is just ridiculous. I'm sorry, why must shows/movies always have the same actor playing their own relatives?
It works if it's semi-serious with a touch of comedy, and/or poking fun at their own production, and/or a theme with everyone being their own relative, or more of an AU thing... And I don't HATE it, but I don't love it either. It felt lame.
I think I choose to believe that Helen has kept an eye on his family since then. She could of course have been out on a random call hunting that creature and randomly stumbled over Will and his mother and all of that, and THEN kept an eye on Will from then on. But if that is the case, it feels more like a play of omg wow destiny, they meet again blah blah. What are the odds! WWII and a guy called Zimmerman! Then wow another Zimmerman by pure chance. (And they happen to look the same, what a beautiful miracle!!! ... Except she never saw his face. Unless she looked at him later off-screen. Whatever.)
Also... that'd mean she more or less forgot Jack after she said he'd never be forgotten.
No, it makes sense for her to never forget him and make sure to take care of his family, since she couldn't do anything for him. And because of that she's around to help Will, and hug him when he's eight, and take care of him, and then bring him into the Sanctuary life when he's an adult. ... Which is part of why I can't really ship them.
If anything it has to be one-sided, like Will has always looked up to her somehow and... some sort of crushy fondness? But even so, it's weird. And it must be even weirder for Helen who must remember that night even clearer, and therefore remember taking care of Will when he was but a boy, and keeping an eye on him since... seeing him grow up. No, I don't mind it, but I don't ship it.
Now, let's move on.
OF COURSE HIS PASSION FOR HER COMES OFF HIM LIKE A BAD SMELL!
They ALL have a great passion for Helen. She is Helen! Helen's personality is overall amazing, AND she was a very different woman compared to the rest during their time. Of course they were all intrigued by her. How can one not be?
I saw some looks and hints and hand-grabbing in For King and Country! I more or less assumed her to be with James then, in some fashion, although I never considered the details of their... relationship, I guess the word would be.
I don't know when or how or on what level it went on... But I definitely started believing that Helen/James was happening or had happened or would happen at some point after seeing that episode.
During this episode I was more or less assuming it to be true, too! Although it leaned slightly more towards fanon than canon in my head. And then BAM! It. Was. True.
John wasn't just winding him up!
Their argument is breathtaking. The tension between them, and then adding Helen to the mix. Ohhh, wow. "You are like a pathetic schoolboy with a crush!"
HE SO IS eeeeeeeee my Helen/John heart is beating so wildly you have NO IDEA!
"You have no idea how much you hurt her!" and his anger, and the closeness and the stare... it's WAY too personal... And like I said earlier, I slash everything that moves. So then:
John: "Hurt h--"
Me: OR HURT Y--
John:"--[h]er, or you?"
Mac: -OU?
I called it! Almost entirely before he said it, too! We said it at the same time. Predictable line as well, sure, but---dglkjsdlglkjsgdhldghlsdlgkjdghsfgsaFHSDHJGD
THEY ACTUALLY SAID IT.
I kept screaming "WHAT IS HAPPENING?" at my screen because I couldn't believe it. How can anyone read platonic stuff from this, especially after Revelations? Oh my god.
AND THE GRABBING OF JOHN AND IT WAS WAY TOO LONG AND TOO SHAKY TO BE JUST ABOUT HIM HAVING HURT HELEN- AND- ANGER- AND THE- AND-
Oh my god, it is canon. He really had to stop himself there. He was so painfully conflicted. Such potential for a hate/love/passion classic moment! WHY did. he. not. kiss. him?
Why didn't JOHN kiss JAMES, is another question. But that shaking. Seriously, I thought he'd grab his collar and be threatening and then let go. But he grabbed his neck/cheeks instead. He was holding his god damned face! And the shot just kept going and he was shaking and-- Those seconds felt like years and I honestly thought he would hate/love/passion/anger-kiss him for a moment there. Not just a fangirly hope or make-believe. But I actually thought they'd go there for a split second. And they didn't. :(
OUCH my arousal! For serious shit, people. And the squee. You have no idea! IT. IS. CANON! No one can still be in denial and not see it.
"Feel better?"
"Much!
"Shall we?"
"God yes!"
EXCUSE ME PEOPLE! EXCUSE ME WHILE THINGS HAPPEN INSIDE MY CHEST AND MY PANTS! Equally shippy romantic fangirl squee in general AND jesus mother effer that was painfully hot and glorious and oh my god!
The looks. The pauses. The gentle tone of John's voice, and then the longest pause and... "GOD yes!" and the intense grabbing and THERE! There should've been a kiss there. John should've grabbed his collar, pulled him in, and right at the second their lips touched he should've teleported. It would've made a great dramatic scene, and made sense and--- OH MY GOD why didn't either kiss the other?
Really now, when John gets shot, Helen goes "John!" in worry. She always worries about him, despite everything he's done/they've been through. And as she shouts for him, and steps forward, James reaches out for her, and everything is just... so shippy. All of my shippy ships are shipped!
Oh noes it cut.
Haha, Spy Guy cleaning up Nikola's mess. I love it.
Didn't notice that the first time around.
Nikola, too, calls him Johnny, of course, and I die. And he talks about how John would never let anything happen to Helen. And I die of shipping. Of course he wouldn't, he still loves her!
Haha, I love their half-assed reactions when Nigel turns invisible.
"What the hell, maan...?"
"Holy mother of god..."
"Well, I'll be."
("You'll be what, Ray?" /random Due South quote)
Now, her desperate screams when James is dying could apply to anyone. It's not fun having people you know die in front of you, I can imagine. But then: "Darling, are you all right?"
And BAM my mind is blown. They actually confirmed it. I love it! John/James/Helen is glorious!
"You made me like you."
Now that is just cute. Spy Guy made Nikola like him. And Nikola whispers that line. Really now. And the running of the claw down him! Never a bad thing. And those nails of his, seriously! I kept wondering if they were CGI or not. I know they have been before. But they looked so DAMNED good, and the way he held/moved his hands. They must have been prop make-up nails or something. Right? Or? Wow!
"Treat her well, James"
And so it ends!
Goodbye

The score! They are currently gunning down Nazis and fleeing in that car, leaving James behind, and it hits me how much I like the score.
It hit me at the same moment!
Even if the French's accent was completely off, I loved that it wasn't a mockery like 99% of French accents in TV/films. I have no idea what the actress was going for, but I like that she didn't make it a mockery.
I understand it, sort of, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a little sad.
YES!
why must shows/movies always have the same actor playing their own relatives?
I hate that trope, hate it, hate it whenever I see it.

Date: 2011-05-25 08:30 pm (UTC)That's kind of a pretty name. I'll go with Jeannette, too, then, until something more official than IMDB shows up to tell me otherwise.
The score was really fitting there, wasn't it? It didn't sound like the regular Sanctuary stuff. Kind of time fitted, no?
And I'm starting to hate that trope! I don't yet, but I'm slowly getting there. Because it's ALL over the place, and never in a funny way, or even a FUN way. It's getting old and lame, and that's not how it works!

Date: 2011-05-25 08:33 pm (UTC)And if not they should listen to fandom and have them kiss. Because after all these John/James confrontations with all that pent up anger and lust...! They need to do that. Or, honestly, maybe more like WE need to see it.

Can I just say that I totally think there's some outtakes, behind the scenes stuff with Chris and Peter totally kissing in that scene? Like, I truly believe this! There must be. I think they would've done it for fun. Just one take! Somewhere out there in the ether...
